Russia has detained a Greek-owned oil tanker, the Green Admire, following its departure from the Estonian port of Sillamae on Sunday. The Estonian Foreign Ministry confirmed the incident and indicated that NATO allies have been alerted.
The Liberia-flagged vessel was using a designated navigation channel that crosses into Russian territorial waters when it was intercepted. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna remarked, “Today’s incident shows that Russia continues to behave unpredictably,” highlighting concerns over the geopolitical implications of the action.
The Green Admire departed Sillamae at 18:40 GMT on Saturday and was reported to be anchored near Russia’s Hogland Island on Sunday afternoon, according to Marine Traffic, a vessel tracking website. A Greek government official stated that the ship had maneuvered into Russian waters to avoid shallows and was intercepted by Russian authorities, who moved it to a secure location to impose a fine.
Shipping data showed that the vessel is operated by Athens-based Aegean Ship Management, with Norway-based Skuld listed as one of its key insurers. However, both companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The ship was reportedly bound for Rotterdam with a cargo of Estonia’s shale oil. The navigation channel utilized by the Green Admire has been established under an agreement among Estonia, Finland, and Russia to facilitate safe passage through shallow waters.
Going forward, vessels entering and leaving Sillamae port will be guided through Estonian territorial waters, according to the Estonian Transport Administration.
NATO has yet to comment on the situation. A Greek coast guard official noted that because the vessel is not Greek-flagged, the Greek state has no authority over it, but a Greek government official stated that Greece is monitoring the case and is available to assist if a request is made.
This incident underscores ongoing tensions in the region and raises questions about maritime security and international relations in the Baltic Sea.
